The Hi-Flier likely is among the first of Univox's guitars. For those who don't know, the Hi-Flier takes after the Mosrite Ventures. This guitar gained significant influence in Japan, particularly because of the Ventures's enormous popularity in the country at that time.

Univox Hi-Flier The Hi-Flier was a copy of the Mosrite guitar and debuted around 1968. It had a thin body, with reverse strat style,a bolt on neck, plastic logo (until about 73, then changed to a decal under the finish), 22-frets on a rosewood fretboard, white pickguard w/ volume tone and 3-way pickup select, two black covered single coil P-90 pickups in the original (later changed to humbuckers).

The Phase II Hi-Flier debuted in 1969, and featured a slightly thinner body, and three way pickup selector in place of the original toggle switches. The Phase II would be the longest running Hi-Flier, staying in production until the Phase III replaced it in 1974, exchanging the P90 pickups for hu.

Perhaps the most famous Univox instruments are the Hi-Flier series of guitars and basses which were produced at the famed Matsumoku factory starting in 1968. These Mosrite-esque instruments were made famous by Kurt Cobain, and have achieved something of a cult following in recent years.

The Hi-Flier was updated again in 1974 with a pair of humbuckers replacing the original soapbar P90s, a revision known as the "Phase III" Hi-Flier. Univox would update the design one final time around 1977 with the Hi-Flier Phase IV.

Kurt's Univox was a model called Hi-Flier, and it was most likely manufactured sometime between 1974 and 1977. The main guide in determining these dates is the two humbucker pickups in the guitar which didn't appear on this model until 1974, and the white pickguard which was replaced with a black one on sunburst models in 1977.
