The conservancy M-Sayod, established in 2004 by a family of traditional hunters, covers an area of 120 km 2 of the southwestern edge of the Darvaz Range. The area has become a stronghold of Tajik markhor ( Capra falconeri heptneri) as well as snow leopards, which have been observed hunting markhor. Surveys in 2012 and 2014 yielded counts of 320.
